Water Baseball

Hello SDC families, it’s getting hot outside (yaaay!) so we thought it would be the perfect time to talk about some summer sports for your children to play! Today's backyard game is fun to play especially if it’s really hot outside. The backyard game is Water Baseball.

pool noodle baseballWater Baseball is a fun team building and communication game for children! It’s also a chance to cool down in the pool on a hot day.

Adult supervision is needed for any children who are still learning to swim. We recommend only playing in shallow pools if your children aren’t strong swimmers yet.

How To Play

The first thing you need to do is create your playing area by setting up the bases. First base is to the right of the swimming pool at the middle point of the pool. Second base is at the centre of the far end of the pool. Third base is to the left of the swimming pool at the middle point of the pool. Home base is at the entrance of the pool where the steps or ladder are. You can place pool objects such as goggles or floating devices to mark the bases.

The children then create two separate teams with the same number of players. One team will be the fielders while the other team is the batters.

Use pool toys for the baseball and the bat. For example, you can use pool noodles as the bat and a light rubber ball as the baseball. The pitcher will be in the middle of the pool with the other players spread out around the bases and outside of the pool.

During The Game

The first batter gets in the water at home base while his teammates stand out of the pool. Or if you have a deck around the pool the batter can hit the ball while standing on the deck.

The pitcher pitches towards the batter. If the player hits the ball and it goes out of the pool, they are out for that round.

If the player hits the ball and it stays in the pool, that player swims to first base. If a fielder catches the ball in the air, they’re out.

If the ball isn't caught, the fielders can either throw the ball to the first baseman before the swimmer gets there, or tag the swimmer as they make their way to first base.

Players can attempt to get to as many bases as they can without being tagged. They remain on that base children-poolsideuntil the next player bats.

Players on other bases need to try and move ahead to the next base when the next player hits the ball in fair play.

When a player gets to home base after running the bases, that team gets one point.

The game is played for 5 innings and the winner of the game is the team with the most points after all of the innings.
