Recent headlines have informed us of a great travesty which included the passing of the basketball icon, Kobe Bryant. This week we wanted to highlight all of the successes that Kobe had accomplished during his career.
He was born on August 23rd, 1978 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His basketball career started when he joined the Lower Merion High School basketball team. The team won the state championships four years in a row. Bryant knew he wanted to pursue his career as a basketball player straight out of high school.
In 1996, the athlete was the 13th overall pick of the NBA draft. He was recruited by the Charlotte Hornets but was soon traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. During Bryant’s second season, he participated in the 1998 All-Star Game. At the young age of 19 years old, he became the youngest All-Star in NBA history. This lead him to becoming a 16-time NBA All-Star.
His talent and hard work lead to also winning 5 NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. In 2008 he received the MVP award with the same team. Bryant competed in the 2008 Olympics and won gold.
The basketball star suffered from a third degree tear in his Achilles tendon on April 12, 2013. It took him more than 6 months to recover. Although he never performed as well has he did prior to the injury, he remained a top player in the league. Bryant announced his retirement shortly after in 2016. In the last 4 years, the retired athlete spent most of his time working withyouth in sports and his family. He especially enjoyed teaching his skills to eldest daughter Gianna who also shared a passion for basketball.
The Kobe & Vanessa Bryant Foundation
In 2007, Kobe and his wife Vanessa had launched the Kobe and Vanessa Bryant Family Foundation (KVBFF). The vision of their foundation was to “provide young people with life-changing experiences designed to broaden their global perspectives”. Currently the KVBFF is directing all donations to the MambaOnThree Foundation. All proceeds are going to the families of those also affected by the tragic accident that took 8 other lives, including his daughter Gianna. Kobe Bryant will be remembered by many as a role model and outstanding basketball player; but above all, a beloved husband, father and friend.
