Soccer fans will be very excited this week. The Champions League returns for the round of 16 knockout stages. It’s been two months since the last group stage games were played and now the most thrilling aspect of club soccers biggest tournament is underway. This lead us to create a top 5 of the best UEFA Champions League Finals.
1) Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan (3-2 on penalties) - 2005
This was hands down the greatest Champions League final game ever played, if not the greatest club game played of all time. AC Milan went into the halftime break with a 3-0 lead and looked to be cruising to victory. The second half was a completely different story as Liverpool made a remarkable comeback to tie the game 3-3. Overtime solved nothing so it came down to a shootout where Liverpool kept their nerve to win 3-2 on penalties.
2) Manchester United 1-1 Chelsea (6-5 on penalties) - 2008
It’s always an exciting and emotional game when two teams from the same league make it to the Champions League final. This game was no exception. The two teams fought hard to a 1-1 tie after regulation time. No one could break the deadlock in overtime. The game made its way to a shootout where one of the most memorable moments in Champions League history took place. Chelsea’s captain John Terry stepped up to take the winning shot, slipped as he took his penalty and had to watch as the ball hit the post. Two rounds later, Manchester United walked away with the trophy.
3) Chelsea 1-1 Bayern Munich (4-3 on penalties) - 2012
One of the biggest underdog stories of all time in the Champions League came from this game. Chelsea defied the odds to make it to the final. Late in the game Bayern finally scored their goal however, the goal was canceled out moments later by Didier Drogba to send the game to overtime. Bayern won a penalty in overtime and Arjen Robben stepped up to take it but was stopped by a remarkable Petr Cech. The game went to a shootout and Didier Drogba converted the final kick of the game to win Chelsea their first ever Champions League final.
4) Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid - 2014
This game didn’t just have two teams from the same league, it had two teams from the same city. It was the battle of Madrid and Real Madrid were the heavy favourites going into this game. However, Atletico were just moments away from winning their first ever Champions Leave final until Sergio Ramos tied the game in the 90’ minute. The quality of the players really came out in overtime as a much more talented Real Madrid dominated to score 3 goals and win the game 4-1.
5) Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United - 2011
This game was a rematch of the 2009 final and Manchester United were looking to get revenge after losing to Barcelona. Unfortunately for United, Barcelona came to play as they put on a passing masterclass. The game was close at halftime as it was tied 1-1. But Lionel Messi was just too hard to handle in the second half. Messi and David Villa both scored in the second half to win Barcelona their second title in three years.
